Details

The South Branch Oconto River Watershed is situated in west-central Oconto, eastern Langlade and eastern Menominee counties. The watershed is approximately 140,332 acres in size and consists of 217 miles of streams and rivers, 2,812 acres of lakes and 20,278 acres of wetlands. The watershed is dominated by forests (71%) and is ranked low for nonpoint source issues affecting streams and groundwater.

Ecological Landscapes for South Branch Oconto River Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The South Branch Oconto River Watershed is part of two ecological landscapes: the Forest Transition and the Northeast Sands. The Forest Transition Ecological Landscape lies along the northern border of Wisconsin's Tension Zone, through the central and western part of the state, and supports both northern forests and agricultural areas. The central portion of the Forest Transition lies primarily on a glacial till plain deposited by glaciation between 25,000 and 790,000 years ago. The eastern and western portions are on moraines of the Wisconsin glaciation. The growing season in this part of the state is long enough that agriculture is viable, although climatic conditions are not as favorable as in southern Wisconsin. Soils are diverse, ranging from sandy loam to loam or shallow silt loam, and from poorly drained to well drained. The historic vegetation of the Forest Transition was primarily northern hardwood forest. These northern hardwoods were dominated by sugar maple and hemlock, and contained some yellow birch, red pine and white pine. Currently, over 60% of this Ecological Landscape is non-forested. Forested areas consist primarily of northern hardwoods and aspen, with smaller amounts of oak and lowland hardwoods. The eastern portion of the Ecological Landscape differs from the rest of the area in that it remains primarily forested, and includes some ecologically significant areas. Throughout the Ecological Landscape, small areas of conifer swamp are found near the headwaters of streams, and associated with lakes in kettle depressions on moraines. Ground flora show characteristics of both northern and southern Wisconsin, as this Ecological Landscape lies along the Tension Zone. The Northeast Sands Ecological Landscape occupies a relatively narrow, vertical band of land in northeast Wisconsin. This landscape formed in glacial outwash sand plains (some of them pitted), and has steep outcropping Precambrian bedrock knolls of basalt, rhyolite, or granite. Sandy ground moraines and end moraines are also interspersed in the landscape. Historically, extensive oak/jack pine barrens and jack pine forests were found in the outwash sand portions of this Ecological Landscape. Moraines supported forests of hardwoods, red pine, and white pine. Outwash plains often contained pitted depressions, resulting in numerous wetlands and kettle lakes. Most of this Ecological Landscape is still forested; aspen predominates, followed by northern hardwoods. Jack pine remains on the outwash plains along with northern pin oak. There are several important occurrences of jack pine/oak barren communities. A small percentage of this Ecological Landscape contains spruce-fir-cedar forest and lowland hardwood forest. The Brazeau Swamp is one of the best representations of large cedar swamp forests in northern Wisconsin.

Maiden Lake Club, Inc.: Maiden Lake Apm Plan: The Maiden Lake Club Association is sponsoring a project to create a comprehensive Aquatic Plant Management (APM) plan for Maiden Lake.

Deliverables: All data collected during study including point intercept (PI) survey data, plant community maps, EWM population mapping summary and results, results of stakeholder survey, presentations at planning meetings, final APM report.

Activities: 1) whole lake PI survey to document the current aquatic plant community; 2) map plant community distribution and abundance for floating-leaf and emergent plants; 3) late-season EWM mapping to document occurrences as points or polygons to indicate individual plants or larger colonies; 4) conduct anonymous stakeholder survey to determine landowner management goals; 5) host meetings including project kick off meeting with landowners, two planning committee meetings, and final wrap-up meeting to share the final management plan with landowners; 6) comprehensive APM plan based upon data collected and stakeholder goals for management activities, and specific implementation plans for future management.

Special Conditions: PI surveys shall be conducted according to: Baseline Monitoring of Aquatic Plants in Wisconsin: Sampling Design, Field and Laboratory Procedures, Data Entry and Analysis Lakes, Publication number PUB-SS-1068 2010. Pickerel Chain Lakes Association: Lmi - Little Pickerel Aeration Implementation Project: The Pickerel Chain Association proposes to install an aerator in Little Pickerel Lake. The project elements and deliverables are specified in the Pickerel Lake\2019s Protection Grant application, dated February 1, 2017.

This grant will fund the installation of an aeration system in Little Pickerel Lake. The aeration system will be installed in 2017 using PCLA members and assisted by the Oconto County WDNR fisheries staff for placing the airline and diffusers. Providing electric power and completing the on-shore preparation work to house the system compressors will occur in late summer/fall. Placement of the system airlines and diffusers into the lake will occur in the fall of 2017. Signing at all public access points to all three lakes of the chain will be placed prior to the ground freezing and the lake forming an ice cover. Open water safety fencing will be installed using the same type fencing system used on Pickerel Lake and will be placed by PCLA members once safe ice for foot travel is present.

If the landowner is the grant sponsor this Lake Protection Grant Agreement serves as the contract. If the best practice(s) will be implemented on land other than the sponsor\2019s, a Conservation Contract between the sponsor and landowner describing the 10-year contract period, minimum operation and maintenance details, and data to be collected is required.

The Department may perform site inspections and/or monitoring to ensure project success.

Pickerel Chain Lakes Association: Lmi - Little Pickerel Aeration Implementation Project: The Pickerel Chain Association proposes to install an aerator in Little Pickerel Lake. The project elements and deliverables are specified in the Pickerel Lake\2019s Protection Grant application, dated February 1, 2017.

This grant will fund the installation of an aeration system in Little Pickerel Lake. The aeration system will be installed in 2017 using PCLA members and assisted by the Oconto County WDNR fisheries staff for placing the airline and diffusers. Providing electric power and completing the on-shore preparation work to house the system compressors will occur in late summer/fall. Placement of the system airlines and diffusers into the lake will occur in the fall of 2017. Signing at all public access points to all three lakes of the chain will be placed prior to the ground freezing and the lake forming an ice cover. Open water safety fencing will be installed using the same type fencing system used on Pickerel Lake and will be placed by PCLA members once safe ice for foot travel is present.

This project will reconnect over 15 miles of class 1 trout waters improving stream function, increasing flood resiliency and restoring nutrient & sediment transport. South Branch Oconto River WatershedWatershed History Note

Much of the South Branch Oconto River watershed is located in the Nicolet portion of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin's north woods. Since 1993, these two national forests have been managed as one, although each national forest has retained its individual identity. National forests are divided into administrative units called ranger districts. The Nicolet side of the forest comprises two ranger districts. The Eagle River and Florence ranger districts have been combined into a single unit - the Eagle River-Florence Ranger District, with ranger stations located in each of those towns. The Lakewood and Laona ranger districts have also been combined into a single unit, called the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District. District headquarters offices are located in both Lakewood and Laona at the old ranger office sites. The landscape of northern Wisconsin is one of the greatest conservation stories in the world - the restoration of the Great North Woods after the era of the timber barons and immigrant labor. The United States was a vigorously growing country in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The nation's forests had been used for over 100 years and continued to be used for fuel, building supplies, barns, fences, ships, railroad ties, whiskey barrels, homes, front doors, paving canals, churches, and hospitals. Our country was built on our great forests. But the forests were not endless and in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Great North Woods were virtually non-existent. The land was cleared and deemed to be a good place for the dreams of European immigrants who came by the thousands to live, farm and hopefully prosper. But in the 1920s and 1930s, many farmers in northern Wisconsin could not afford the taxes on their lands during hard economic times, and so forfeited or abandoned their lands to county governments. The counties in turn sold these lands to the federal government and the Chequamegon and Nicolet National Forests were born in the 1930s from those over cut, burned over, and farmed out lands. During the hard economic times of the Great Depression, young men came to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).The Forest Service's massive reforestation efforts by the CCC boys as well as careful stewardship of the new forest growth over 80 years have provided the people of Wisconsin with 1.5 million acres of beautiful forest -albeit a young forest. However, beyond the beauty is a forest that is in still need of restoration. The mix of tree species is the result of what the timber barons and farmers left us when they abandoned their lands. The CCC boys pine plantations are now 70 or more years old. Much of the forest is even-aged, that is, the trees are all the same age even though some trees are bigger than others. A healthy forest is one that contains trees of different ages and different species. The National Forests are managed for multiple uses - serving people by providing sustainable forests, beautiful landscapes, clean water, clean air as well as forest products that people want and need.
